This past Friday and Saturday, August 15th and 16th we operated two 8 hour whale watching trips in the Santa Barbara Channel. The goal was to find Humpback Whales and we had a great time with nearly 10 whales sighted each day.

So where's the Orcas? Well, the following day, Sunday August 17th a pod of Killer Whales was encountered by a passing sailboat, right where we had spent the previous two days watching the Humpbacks! This was in the channel between Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Island. Thanks to Alisa Schulman-Janiger for sharing this verified report (with videos) of this sighting that was submitted to the California Killer Whale Project.

So, just because a few months have passed since our most recent trips in June doesn't mean that the opportunity for watching Orcas today is low. More important than any date on the calendar, is the ability to experience very calm wind conditions in the outer island area. Frankly that has only happened for 10 days or less from the June through August period so far. There just hasn't been much of an opportunity for anyone to search those areas for Orcas. These winds will start to relax into late Summer and Fall, and once that happens we will be able to access the Killer Whales. Looking forward to another great season exploring with you all!
